This fun, free zine will help transform the way you look at moths!

Avid nature journaler Akshay Mahajan is obsessively in love with moths, and he also loves journaling and digital illustration. At our 2024 Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference, Akshay taught a class called Moths: A Love Story. He developed this zine as part of that class to help people not only draw these beautiful Lepidopteras, but also read a moth's shape, size, patterns, colors, angles and their eccentric invertebrate fashion sense. (PS: What is a “zine”? It rhymes with “green” and is a mini-magazine!)

In creating this zine, Akshay scrubbed multiple field guides, articles, and worked in collaboration with Meghan Ashley Peterman (curator of Hallberg Butterfly Gardens, Sebastopol, California).

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Akshay Mahajan's love for bugs blossomed in 2019 when he attended a "how to draw bugs" class by Dr. Stephanie Dole, a.k.a. BeetleLady, at the first-ever Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference. Through Dr. Stephanie and other bug mentors, he learned the importance of bugs in our ecosystem and realized that the fear and hate against them were unconscious biases developed through misrepresented bug villains in movies and media outlets. Once he viewed these fascinating creatures through a lens of curiosity, it gradually chipped away at his fear, giving way to admiration and love. "What we love, we want to protect," says Akshay. Since then, he has been creating comics, zines, illustrations, and nature journals on bug science, feeling the need to share his metamorphosis process to bring empathy, care, and an urgent sense of conservation to the captivating world of bugs. For his day job, Akshay works as an electrical and software engineer but constantly seeks opportunities to engage with our beloved journaling community in nature. See more of Akshay's work here.

We encourage you to download, print, and fold this zine for yourself AND print copies to share with your students, friends, and nature journal club--please share it widely! It is designed to print on one 8.5 x 11-inch piece of paper. Note: This zine is a single-sided print.

ALSO: Check out the short video showing how to print, cut, and fold your zine. (This is for a different zine, but the folding method is the same. Thanks to Brooke Morales for making this helpful video!)
